The Race between Arch Rivals Sony and Microsoft Continues as Sony Acquires Bungie.

In response to its rival Microsoft’s massive deal of acquiring Activision, Sony has come up with its own acquisition in the gaming world. Yesterday, Sony announced that it plans to acquire Bungie, the maker of popular game Destiny2 for $3.6 billion.

The acquisition will let Bungie stay with its own identity and game publishing plans as it will become “an independent subsidiary” of Sony. Bungie will have the freedom to “self publish and reach players” according to its own plans.

This means that it will remain as an exclusive multiplatform studio just like Bethesda in the past.

“This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience,” a statement released by PlayStation’s Jim Ryan. ‘We understand how vital Bungie’s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow.”

Bungie will continue to provide updates to Destiny 2 and its community. Moreover, the studio’s 900 plus employees are also working on an entirely new IP which will get a launch in 2025.

Interestingly, Bungie was once related to Microsoft when it launched Halo exclusively for Xbox. But later on, Bungie decided to stay independent. Bungie then joined hands with Activision for the launch of Destiny 1. In 2019,

Bungie split up with Activision after a bumpy business partnership. Now, in 2022, Bun-gie joins hands with Sony, and Activision is scheduled to become part of Microsoft.

The acquisition of both Activision and Bungie came amidst a barrage of allegations related to workplace discrimination and harassment.

Last year, IGN published a report which highlighted workplace issues in Bun-gie. The report revealed issues about racism, sexism, and other workplace-related discrimination. Bun-gie CEO Pete Parsons shared in his blog post, “I’m heartened by the progress we have made, but it is not enough, and it has taken too long.”

He further added, “It also does not sweep away the bad experiences people have had at our studio.”
