League of Legends Fan Project Legacy Server in Jeopardy as Riot Games Issues Cease-and-Desist
League of Legends fan-based project that goes by the name ‘Legacy Server’ is in trouble as Riot issues cease-and-desist to the developer. On the other hand, the developer denies the claims about “extorting code” and assets from the Chronoshift team.
The fan-made project of League of Legends lets players access a ten-year-old version of League of Legends. The server was in development and was announced last year in March. However, Riot has now shut down the Legacy Server via cease-and-desist proceedings.
A letter was sent to the Chronoshift developers earlier which demanded an immediate halt to the project Chronoshift and to take down the server.
The letter read, “Riot cannot permit the use or exploitation of unauthorized emulated services in any manner, by anyone, irrespective of the intent or purpose. In addition, we demand that you turn over to Riot all of the software materials associated with Chronoshift, including any modded clients and any source code you or others have developed in connection with the project.”

Riot made it clear that this letter is a standard demand issued to those developers who are engaged in the unauthorized use of Riot’s intellectual property.
The developers were utterly disappointed in Riot and how they tackled the situation. Nevertheless, the Chronoshift operators accepted the demands and complied with Riot Games.
Moreover, the Chronoshiftdev account wrote, “To our best knowledge, and the assessment of the lawyers specialized in IT copyright we talked the project over with, we have not done anything illegal.”
The post on Reddit also shared that the project was intended to preserve the version of the game which is no longer available to download. The post further read, “Chronoshift has not interacted with the live game, or live game accounts, in any way, shape or form. Chronoshift was never going to go past a patch in early season two, and was not designed to compete with the live game.”
As for the last update, Riot has issued a warning to the developers not to go ahead with the project.
